Here are some choices I made:
- Take the money
- Chose the middle ship (5-6 months build time) and used money
- Took Route 2
- Raided Monastery #3
- Won and got loot
- Paid back my initial investment, had money, slaves and loot left over

I still lost. I feel like a Klingon. No matter how good your winnings, there will always be a way to fail Kahless lol

I played the Viking Quest took the medium sized boat too, burnt down the monestary--got in trouble with the Chief...but still was put in charge of Denmark (HEY!).

Although I failed the quest - not sure why, perhaps because I landed on the island too close to the monastery and thus gave the monks a chance to prepare – I enjoyed the game and learned a little bit about preparing for a Viking raid and what was expected of a successful ship owner. The building of the ship was nicely detailed. The game was well paced, I thought.

The game raised questions like what would a successful ship owner do to be in the chief’s favor on his return? Why attack a monastery at all – why not something else? How did the monks prepare for a possible attack? I didn’t realize the Vikings had slaves; what did they use them for and how did they treat them? How would a woman be treated on the ship, even if she was with her husband? How frequently did women (and children) accompany raiding parties and what were their roles? And so on.

It could be used as a model for students to create slideshow-style games. Could be used to teach question-posing and/or critiquing online learning objects – what did you learn that you would like to know more about? what was confusing? what did you find most appealing about the game? Why? How might you change the game to make it more interesting? To what other topics could this style of gaming lend itself?

Of the 3 games, this one was the most engaging. It would be a good language learning game. Besides having to understand the choices and perhaps discussing them with a partner, students could also keep a list of other things they would like to know about the Vikings.

I approached the game from a "capitalist" point of view - you make profit, you win. Sort of like SimCity or any resource gathering games. I must admin that I did not think of the sociological aspects of the game

I didn't realize there were two threads related to Viking Quest when I wrote my too-long reply in the other thread! I'll build on that other reply here, but there's no need to read my other reply. I evaluated the course from the perspective of trying to teach students about Viking raiders and the raid on Lindisfarne Abbey.

But using it to teach students to ask questions about games is a great idea! I'm really enjoying this thread.
