So what is Gamification?

To start why don't you take a look at how marketers do it?
26 elements of a Gaming Marketing Stragetgy

Then take a look a this slideshare entitled Games, Gamification and the Need for Engaging Learners by Karl Kapp, the author of The Gamification of Learning and Instruction.

Can we use this in education? What changes would need to be made?

I must admit that I didn't go through the entire presentation by Kapp (I have him book on my bookshelf, too, but haven't had much of an opportunity to read it yet).


Based on the Marketing blog post, I think we can use some of these principles, if used responsibly. For example incentivising (i.e. external motivation) can work well in class, provided that you don't associate performance with a "treat" (substitute treat with whatever you want to hand out). I've read research that shows that this type of extrinsic motivation can be harmful because once the treats stop coming, the behavior itself stops. The incentivising needs to lead to some sort of internal change for the learner where the activity itself takes on a life of its own, and the activity because the treat, and become the motivator. Everything else is just a cherry on the top :)

Kae we had a chance to talk about this after the COLTT conference, and I had seen all the presentations on it on Wednesday (Thursday was my last day of F2F classes so missed that). I really thought about this and it is basically a behavior modification program based on token economy. Although in many cases the "token" you get is just bragging rights. I ran my private prison and halfway house (owned it) in the late 1970-1080s on a cross between reality therapy and behavior modification - coupled with forced cultural change concepts. We used "badges" (just colored stickers) denoting your levels of access to freedom.

People use games all the time, they just don't think of them as games. If I think to myself, "I can take 30 minutes off to read a book and have ice tea if I grade all of discussion 4 in my online class." In effect I am gamifying my life, I am giving myself a badge, a token, that I can trade in for something of value. We do these 'trade outs' all the time. Once we can convince educators that it is OK to have fun learning, we have half the battle won. Once we convince administrators that we aren't "destroying or demeaning" the value of the education system -- so long stalled in meritocracy (my personal opinion) -- and get rid of that "think outside of the box" cliche -- we give them the freedom to have an enjoyable time within the classroom and it will improve the student's experience as well. There was a lot of "gaming" going on in my Sociology 101 class this summer (I hadn't taught it for four years) and I had a real free hand in what went on. I do take attendance, and if you include a few "excused absences" as "attending" because they covered the material, that class had 24 students with an attendance average rate of 98%. They chose between videos, they had access to computers in the classroom, they played games that furthered their understanding of the subject matter.

I don't mean to be an example, but did have a chance to put more into practice this summer session. They did have project approval, outline, in-class presentation and paper in support of the presentation, that you couldn't move forward unless you had done them in sequence. I have ordered this book, gasp, even used it is $18.00, need a refresher in token economy. I will post later about it once it is here and I have read it, I used to really understand this well, alas, time has passed. This is an OLD book (1999) but nothing better for basics. . . TOKEN ECONOMY BOOK ON AMAZON

This reminds me of complimentary currencies. These are local currencies that communities invent for themselves. They are a type of token economy. I read about them some years ago in a book called The Future of Money by Bernard Lietaer. The case study below shows the dramatic difference that these currencies can make. Interestingly the tokens in the example are actual bus tokens.
