I think most horror game fans know of PewDiePie. The man posts Machinima style tutorials (I hope this still counts as Machinima?) when he plays through a horror game. Of course, he's not the only one posting this type of Machinima (search "walkthroughs" on Youtube).
Since I am a major fan of horror games (just watching them, not playing through them, because I'm too nervous to ever complete a mission), I watch PewDiePie's videos to understand how to play through a game. Here's his latest video on "The Corridor" (Warning: Contains some bad language):
I can really envision getting my English Comp students to create games in separate teams, and then asking each team to create video walkthroughs (like the one by PewDiePie) for other teams. Students will be so invested in the process that they wouldn't even realize that they are writing process essay and creating games based on complex Rhetoric and Composition principles. :D
Excited about Machinima possibilities, Sherry Jones
Man, that guy was REALLY annoying :\ The game, on the other hand, looked pretty interesting. I didn't even realize that the text (at the title screen) was in russian, until the guy couldn't read it - at which point I thought to myself "oh yeah....that does say выход" no wonder he couldn't read it ;-)
This type of video is colloquially known as a "Let's Play" and is not really machinima, since all the videographer is doing is playing through a game with (hopefully) entertaining commentary. PewDie is very hit-or-miss with people, people tend to either love him or hate him.
Other worthwhile Let's Players are Kikoskia, ProtonJon, DeceasedCrab and NakaTeleeli.
Here's to all the educated people who don't hate games! -
