Hey Everyone!

I am an instructional designer who is passionate about learning. In fact, I spend a lot of my free time learning from exceptional teachers across the globe. This learning does not take place in a classroom, school or university. I spend my free time learning in games, virtual worlds, the twitterverse and the blogsphere. This is where I learned about flow and fiero which I believe are absolutely necessary for games based learning.

I also learned a tremendous amount from being involved in the first iteration of the Games MOOC. I have to thank AK, Chris the Curator, Lotus, Amber and so many of MOOCers to contributing to my education.

I'll be one of the facilitators for the Games MOOC. I have seen deeper learning take place using games and simulations than any other format. I am truly interested in seeing how engagement and immersion can become part of the curriculum. For the past three years, along with the other course facilitators (LeeDale, Abacus and grasshopper 98) I have been using games and simulations to teach. We have taken students into Second Life, World of Warcraft, War Hammer, Metaplace, Forbidden City and numerous other games. We have also been managing an island and designing simulations in Second Life.

I've also been working with an unnamed guild of educators (bluebarker, Gridjumper, izzykaru, Abacus, Aevalle, Cat and Jerry Buchko) to offer open courses on P2PU ( A Virtual Worlds, Games & Education Tour; ARG Academy and MOOC - Machinima Online Open Course) and produce EduMachinima events. We have also seem to have become the badge squad for the badges that will be offered in this MOOC and also over at G.A.M.E. Gamers Advancing Meaningful Education.

Along with Peggy Sheehy (Maratsade) and Larry Cocco, we have started a guild called G.A.M.E. Gamers Advancing Meaningful Education. There we have started a webinar series called "It Takes A Guild - A Guild of Educators."

Well, I’m a gamer girl and I'm ready to get started - so shall we play a game?

I am LeeDale (leedale shepherd in some virtual worlds and/or games). I am a tech-head who flies her geek-flag high. :-D

Hello, everypeople!

I'm Hawkye, gamer of approximately eleventy-billion years and supporter of edumacation. I like games, gaming, gamers, and generally spending my time in an enjoyable yet unproductive manner.

I play any number of games including MMORPGs (World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dark Age of Camelot), action games, simulators, and just about anything besides sports.

I'mma lookin' forward to this. Let's have some fun!

Hi I am "the grasshopper" aka, Grasshopper98, "98" is my old race car number when I drove stock cars and drag cars, grasshopper, ah that is another story. I have been around computers since they had ticker tape/dial up, 150 Baud, and of course punch cards (which by the way can be converted into interesting holiday wreaths -- it was a fad of the time). I have an A. A. from Front Range, a B.A. mcl, PBK, from CU in Criminal Anthropology, a M.A. in Anthropology from CUand additional work in Grad School of Public Administration and a Ph.D, in Medical Anthropology from CU. I owned and operated a private prison and halfway house, then was licensed to set class A explosives on a road project, then went into High Tech and High Tech Research companies. Somehow I landed as a part-time adjunct at FRCC, teaching Anthropology, Ethinic Studies and Criminal Justice. I teach online and face-to-face classes, Kae has helped put games into my classes and we do a lot of cutting edge things in the classes.

This is old but it is what we did with games and everything in a Anthropology of Folklore class in 2010, What does it Take to Engage Today's Students?, and if I have your curoisity up about me, well here is an Animoto that I use to get the students to talk about themselves in the introductory discussions, I have them guess which are true. Can you? Who is you Professor? Does she have a LIFE outside of class?

I am anxious to learn from all of you, I always learn so much from my students as well as contributors to forums, no one has all the answers, I just tried an augmented reality in my Introduction to Criminal Justice. I have honest students they spoke up told me they didn't want to do it and gave reasons, they were right... LOL Sometime you are the bug and sometimes you are the windshield.

Hello everyone! My name is Sherry Jones (aka Mind Erasure), and I am a Rhetoric and Composition Instructor, a Digital Storytelling + Ed-Tech trainer, and an Edupunk (if I may label myself). I am passionate about researching and implementing innovative teaching models in face-to-face and hybrid classrooms, and my current obsession is with game-based learning (GBL); currently, I am steeped deep in research in the rhetoric of games, the innovative methods for rhetorically analyzing games, and the methods for facilitating students to design their own aesthetically enticing and rhetorically effective games. Before joining this wonderful Games MOOC, I have had some experience in gamifying the classroom using missions, experience points, and video games, as you can see in exhibit A here:

After taking Games MOOC I, I realize that there is just so much more to learn about the world of games (and that this type of learning model has been around for a very, long time). Even though I practice curating games (and nudge at my students to help me curate), taking this Games MOOC has helped me confront and acknowledge the grim reality that there are still so many more games and research on GBL that I know very little of. So, I feel excited and anxious to learn a lot more from all of you, possible curators, in Games MOOC II. As you learn with us, please curate your findings, reflections, game goodies, etc., so we can all learn together!

WoW (pun intended) I learned a lot too, this first one really pushed me to the edge of the envelope and a tad over the edge. Ideas, concepts, technology, availablity, and I could go on, come so fast it was sometimes like trying to just get a drink from a fire hose! I love how fast this second session got off the ground.

You know some of my best friends are people I met in gaming, in your case we were face-to-face, then online. I have a friend who I met in an online game, and she lived in Texas, moved to Alaska, and we met on her way to Alaska face-to-face and again on her way home just a year ago, we talked for hours! Then she has joined me on FACEBOOK, it is a very nice friendship and we don't even play that game anymore! LOL

I had the same experience, the grim reality there is so much more, I think I am ahead of the curve but that curve is gaining on me all the time. I have been involved in little in education that mimics how fast one must adjust and change quickly to be on top since I worked in high-tech companies developing computers/disc drives, and providing to military. You couldn't stop thinking or trying to extrapolate ahead. Same with what is in this MOOC

Hello everyone,

I am an Associate Dean for Career and Technical Education for community college level classes. I also teach Accounting, Business and Multimedia Graphic Design occasionally.

I am part of the advisory board for the Games Mooc. So my quest is to participate at various levels and give feedback to the Lead Instructor for future improvement of the MOOCs.

I've used lots of games in my community college level classes both face to face and online. I've used World of Warcraft, Karma Tycoon, Diner Dash, and many other games. I've always been a gamer starting with Pac Man, Centipede and Galaga and continuing to World of Warcraft, Rift and Second Life. I'm always looking for new ideas and collaborators.

Although I'm a regular participant in the Wednesday Tweetchats, I really do not use Social Media a lot. I occasionally tweet and blog at Center4EduPunx. (http://www.center4edupunx.org)

I also really love the synchronous Thursday hangouts as they are a lot of fun and we've had some great speakers.

Greetings from Lyr Lobo -- I'm a gamer geek and Lyrae the Insane in WoW! *waves* This is an amazing opportunity to explore games-based learning with a strong, supportive educator community.

A game-based culture recognizes the benefits of engagement, the importance of accomplishments, rewards and other incentives, such as reputation, growth (levels), treasure and community.

Confessions of a Gamer

Until recently, most serious gamers would not disclose their habits publicly to avoid social recriminations and censure. Gamers were considered the unwashed masses who gave up on life and played excessively.

I'm fond of how games bring us together, and how adversity in games helps us to identify new solutions to deep problems. This image shows my SL avatar with a student whose BoxBot avatar serves as a tribute to the character Silent Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series.

As a lifelong gamer and roleplayer, I've played Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) since its origin in the 70s and was ranked above the Grandmaster level as both a classic player and game master. As a roleplayer with 24 years of game convention experience, I've played hundreds of games at GenghisCon, BenCon, TactiCon and GenCon.

Lurking is a way of life...

To keep abreast with the genres, I collect video games for all of the major consoles and own a Kinect as well as Rock Band, Guitar Hero, a driving simulator and three gun for the Xbox and Playstation 2 consoles. I rarely have time to play them, but like to study their designs when reflecting on each game's features and how it supports a player's behavior.

For online games, I hosted LAN parties for strategy games in 90s (Warcraft II, Red Alert, Command and Conquer, etc.) and played over the Internet since Underlight (1996) and Ultima Online (1997) were released. As a software engineer, I beta tested (and wrote bug reports) for 12 massive multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs) and played in 23 MMORPGs.

WoW is my favorite MMORPG and I moved to Sisters of Elune to serve as an officer with Cognitive Dissonance during its first year.

In WoW, I had four accounts (now three, as I closed my Euro account) and as a scientist, I like to test quirky behaviors and evaluate new ways to solve problems. *grins*

The Gamer Educator

At the doctoral level, I designed a doctoral degree program in Emerging Media at Colorado Tech and in one of my courses, included the book Total Engagement by Byron Reeves and J. Leighton Read. Check it out at http://www.totalengagement.org/authors.html

Several of my classes have featured games and game designs, including CS 830 Advanced Topics: Games course, CS 381 Software Design during which the entire class created a capture the flag game with a maze, traps and treasure, and I taught CS 835, a doctoral elective course that featured Robotics. CS 641 Software Requirements Engineering wrote the software requirements for an amusement park full of games in Second Life that they built and modified in CS 672 Systems Engineering Methods.

Selected Research in Games and Educational Game Design

In addition to sharing over a dozen game-based presentations at GameTech, I/ITSEC and a variety of conferences, I published four practitioner papers that reported on the observations from the gamification of an online course from the course design, delivery and assessment perspectives.

For a book on identity and culture, I wrote a chapter on gamer culture in MMORPGs and co-edited the book with Sharon Tettegah. Peggy Sheehy, Andy Stricker and I are publishing a chapter in a book called The Immersive Internet that highlights the importance of community, roleplaying and learning activities as noted during the experiences at Ramapo in Second Life.

Since 2005, I've hosted 112 conference presentations and keynote addresses, and as Myxen, I served on the Black Ops community that designed Episode 1 for a TV series called Bar Karma with Will Wright, who is famous for The Sims, SimCity and Spore. Bar Karma is the most mysterious bar in the universe, and where you go when your karma catches up with you.

Fame and Fortune...is rarely the path of the educator

In 2010, Andy Stricker, Mike McCrocklin and I won the Grand Prize ($25,000) for our space simulation called the Mars Expedition Strategy Challenge. The money went to research, but it was gratifying to have our serious simulation and games recognized by the US Army's Simulation and Training Technology Center.

Since then, we've conducted research in a Mars Geothermal game that uses somatic computing to assess if players remember better when they share an identity with the subject. In one game, half of them were water molecules and half were human.

Ongoing Research

We recently supervised doctoral research to assess shared leadership during a hostage rescue game and currently have a student conducting STEM research in the Mars Geothermal game.

In support of a NSF grant at Lane Community College, I am refining my 3D designs to help novice game development students understand how to use virtual worlds for simulations and game design.

As part of the Global Learning Forum, Andy Stricker and I are working on Virtual Harmony, an OpenSim environment that weaves community collaboration and creativity in the design of educational games and learning activities.

Ten regions of the Virtual Harmony grid have been loaded on the Military Open Simulator Enterprise Strategy (MOSES) to test and extend the community. The MOSES team which is advancing the state of technology in 3D grids that use open source tools, and we meet every Friday to discuss the latest accomplishments and challenges. One of the Virtual Harmony games was ported to Unity3D using mesh models for testing on an iPhone.

Gaming is a way of life and it offers rich rewards!

Welcome Lyr Lobo, I am not much of a WoWer, StarTrekOnline and Minecraft and WarHammer and Magic the Gathering (all online) I don't do the War Hammer miniatures game. I did just stop at a game store and take some pictures of the minitures and players for WarHammer. You mentioned we were basically "in the closet" as gamers, and I agree. Even when I started working with gamification in my classes, I got odd remarks or glances from other faculty that thought I was basically nutz, or "one of those." Fortunately times change, and although I am a Guild Officer, I can learn so much from others.

I want to share a moment in time with you... In 1978 I was actually hooked up online by a 150 modem, costing $10 to operate and if I went to research sites it could go up to $500 an hour, had to know what you were looking for and it was limited. My son and his friend would go online and they randomly could text someone they happen to hit their computer/link, the questions amazed me as an anthropologist, no question of how you look, how old, how educated, the question was where are you and what kind of computer do you have and how are you using it.

So when I went to get my Ph.D. theme approved I asked to be able to study contextually the interaction taking place online. I was turned down, and told, "Oh, no one will every be typing things together over that system but engineers and scientists." I still grouse about that. Laid out of that program till 1988 and went back when they had gained some sense about computers, but still couldn't get the subject I wanted. Ended up doing "Single-parent Anglo-Mothers and their Delinquent Sons: Remodeling Personal Culture. I owned and operated a private prison and halfway house from 1976-83, so had the data at hand. Longitudinal study.

I did use game theory in developing the prison and halfway house behavioral modification system, using mostly token or as we would say now "badges" to show what privileges and access to the outside world anyone had in the halfway house or privileges in the private prison.

I became interested in game theory in 1974 when I took a class in it from Russ McGoodwin at CU, his dissertation was on game theory and shark fisherman of Mexico and he showed that even they don't acknowledge a strategy or play, that they did chose behavior that increased their chances of success.

It makes me happy just to read some of these posts. It warms my heart to see someone identify themselves as both "Dean" and "Gamer," for example.

I can see that I'm not the only one still sore about the fact that games were (and in some cases still are) seen as people with no life and no future. I'm glad that we're helping to change that since, in fact, most gamers are incredibly intelligent people who would make wonderful assets in the "real world."

I'm so glad to see you all here. Welcome aboard or welcome back to all of you!

Abacus, I answered you in other posts, but don't see I answered you here, just doing my "last day of the week for the MOOC" double-check, ah must be that "dean" thing that scared me off. LOL. I do know you in real life and have been at many conferences or events before you moved to the totally online college :( Sad day for me by the way.

I agree the speakers on Thursday are outstanding, Kae does such a great job of managing them. I know you are a bigger tweeter than I am, but I do give it my best shot, usually not on the live tweetchat, simply because I am not usually home from my college face-to-face classes soon enough to participate.

I am a big https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDY9BGitU8s&feature=plcpacebooker, and many of my online or F2F students end up being on my 'friends' lists, it is fun to see what they are doing two or three years later! Amazing students. I never did MySpace and I don't do "instant messages" unless it is a student who does it in D2L, then I respond but I don't initiate it and never do google chat, etc. For instance, since my facebook photo albums are public, my students can see photos of our altar for Day of the Dead and then share them. I have actually gotten a short assignment sent in a FB message, student did it from their iPhone.

I know you pioneered the use of WoW with our college system, and I envy you having accounting and business, harder to push that into social sciences and get my students access, that "auction house" works perfectly.

Well I hope this encourages others to reply to you as you have always been so very helpful to me and always were patient and understanding when you had to explain it again! Sorry us dyslexics are that way, after all we can't decide if we believe in Dog. ;)
