What is your name?
Sam, King of the Britains (that is, in Civilization V)

What is your quest?
To seek and find the Holy Grail (of education).

What is your favorite color?
blue...no, yellow!

Hi everyone! I really enjoyed looking through your posts and getting to know you all a little better! It sure looks like there is a great variety of knowledge participating in the MOOC and I look forward to interacting with all of you more.

My name is Sam Gedeborg and I am an Instructional Designer at Utah Valley University, particularly working with blended and hybrid courses. I graduated from Boise State University with a Master of Educational Technology and have been interested in Game-based learning since before I knew what to call it. I remember when I taught my first "remedial" math class my principal rejected the idea of Survivor Algebra because it would take away from the "direct instruction" in her opinion.

I particularly love the notion of students learning through building games. One of my more popular classes I taught was Computer Programming in high school where the students learned C# through building small computer games. In fact their final was to develop their own video game using the concepts we had discussed in class. Then, during the 2 hour final we had a "game festival" where we played each other's games, and voted on winning implementations.

I found the Game-based MOOC in November of 2012, but since MOOC II was already well developed I just lurked until the end of the MOOC. I hope to move it up a level (or even 2-3) and help contribute and create through MOOC III.

I can testify first-hand that games have brought a level of desire, engagement, and passion into learning that would not have been there otherwise.

I guess to answer the some of the questions, my weapon of choice is "truth", and my favorite game has to be any TBS (turn based strategy) games - (love the logic).

Thanks to all the Guild Officers for spending the time and energy to put this site together and maintain its upkeep. See you all out there!

Welcome, and it is our pleasure to try be helpful and we do absorb all the interesting things you know and do too. Kae does the heavy lifting. I am really excited about this session, as well as the one in summer (immersion) and while we might not have the holy grail, we might find a few of the sacred sites together.

I wish I had played Civilization before! It sounds so interesting. Got to save money though. :)
